Ten things you need to know about using removable dentures
Removable dentures, commonly known as removable dentures, are a restorative method for missing teeth. The advantage of this restoration method is that less tooth tissue is removed, which makes it easier to remove and clean, and helps to maintain a clean denture and good oral hygiene.
However, since removable dentures are supported by the dental bed or natural teeth and are relatively large in size, they have their own usage characteristics compared to fixed dentures and implant dentures:
01. When you first wear the movable denture, you will generally have a foreign body sensation, increased saliva, unclear pronunciation, and even nausea and vomiting, etc., you need to insist on wearing, generally 1-2 weeks can be improved, and individuals may take longer to adapt.
02. After restoration of removable denture can not achieve the same chewing efficiency as natural teeth, so you should avoid chewing too sticky, too hard or tough food.
03. Involving missing front teeth using removable denture repair try to avoid cutting and biting food on the front teeth, because it is easy to lead to unstable phenomenon such as denture warping, and should try to use both back teeth to chew food.
04. When removing or putting on the denture, you should follow the method instructed by the attending physician, avoiding the use of violence; at the same time, you should avoid putting on the denture by “biting”, which will easily cause the denture to be deformed, making it difficult to put on the denture, or the denture retaining force will be reduced, or even the denture will be fractured.
05. After each meal, the denture should be cleaned and the mouth should be cleaned properly before inserting the denture.
06. When cleaning the removable denture, the inner and outer surfaces of the denture should be cleaned with a soft-bristled toothbrush, and the use of toothpaste is not recommended.
Since the inner surface of the denture is close to the tooth bed, it is not recommended to scrub the inner surface with force, so as not to cause excessive abrasion of the inner surface of the denture. Care should also be taken to avoid the denture falling on the floor or being washed away in the sink during cleaning, and a plastic basin can be placed underneath if necessary.
07. When you sleep, you should stop wearing movable denture, let the tooth bed get rest, so as to avoid the overloading of the tooth bed and aggravate the resorption of the tooth bed or even lead to the pressure and pain of the tooth bed; the denture should be cleaned and put in room temperature water after removing, and you can use special denture cleaning tablets to soak the denture after dissolving the water, but don’t suggest soaking the denture in alcohol or hot water, as it is easy to cause deformation or even cracking of the denture; the movable denture should be avoided to be put in dry place or not worn for a long time. It is not recommended to use alcohol or hot water to soak the denture.
08. If the denture loosens or even falls off during meals, contact the attending physician for a follow-up in time to avoid accidental swallowing of the denture, especially if the denture is small in size. Don’t adjust the denture by yourself, as you don’t have the experience, it may cause irreversible deformation of the denture.
It is recommended to prepare special containers or boxes to store your denture, especially if it is small, to avoid accidentally pouring it into the sewer or losing it. Always remember to store your denture when traveling to avoid losing it or forgetting it on the train or plane.
09. If you have pain in your teeth, you can stop wearing your denture temporarily and place it in room temperature water if you cannot make a follow-up appointment in time.
Wear the denture 3 hours to 1 day in advance of the follow-up appointment so that the attending physician can make targeted adjustments to the denture. It is important not to stop wearing the denture for too long, as the position of the remaining teeth in the mouth will change after stopping wearing the denture for a long period of time, which will often lead to difficulties in removing and wearing the denture, or even make it impossible to wear it again.
10. Since the bed of teeth will continue to resorb and remodel after tooth extraction, the inner surface of the denture will not fit with the bed of teeth for a long time, which will lead to the denture warping, local pressure and pain on the bed of teeth, etc. Therefore, if the conditions permit, it is possible to have a follow-up once every half a year to once a year.
Activity denture is generally recommended to be replaced in about 5 years, but each person’s situation is different, the restoration of the remaining teeth in the mouth, the condition of the dental bed and your chewing habits will affect the service life of the denture, it is recommended to go to a professional restorative clinic to check and decide.
